Discovery of the Crime and Arrests

On October 20, 2005, a resident surnamed Huang was discovered dead in his apartment in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province. The incident came to light when concerned relatives visited his home after being unable to contact him for an extended period. Following the initiation of a police investigation, three scavengers who had been residing in the victim's apartment disappeared, making them the primary suspects in the case. In February 2006, law enforcement apprehended suspect Wang Jun, who had fled to Guizhou, followed by the arrests of Shi Wei and Wu Shaobin in Shanghai. The suspects confessed to the charges, revealing that the homicide was a premeditated act of retaliation.

Subsequent investigations revealed that the motive for the crime originated in 2004. Huang, who identified as homosexual, met a homeless scavenger named Zhang Tao under a local overpass. Huang offered to provide free room and board on the condition that Zhang engage in a same-sex relationship with him. Driven by the urgent need for shelter and sustenance, Zhang accepted the terms and moved into Huang's residence.Later, Zhang introduced two other scavengers in their twenties, Wang Jun and Wu Shaobin, to the apartment under identical conditions. Just one week before the murder, Huang brought another scavenger, Shi Wei, into his home using the same arrangement. Ultimately, five young homeless men were living with Huang under these coercive circumstances.


Conspiracy and Execution

The unequal power dynamics and the trading of dignity for survival generated profound humiliation and anger among the young men. In mid-October 2005, the five scavengers discussed their shared grievances regarding Huang's behavior, leading them to conspire to retaliate and rob him.On the evening of October 18, the group feigned harmony and drank heavily with Huang until he became severely intoxicated. At approximately 2:00 AM the following day, the men assaulted the sleeping victim, coerced him into revealing his bank card PIN, withdrew 5,000 RMB in cash, and fled the scene. This premeditated robbery and assault resulted in Huang's death.


Case Reflection

The suspects, all in their twenties, lacked adequate education and legal awareness. Instead of seeking lawful avenues to address their exploitation, they resorted to lethal violence, permanently ruining their own futures. Conversely, the victim utilized the severe poverty of vulnerable individuals to fulfill his own desires, ignoring the profound risks of such an unbalanced relationship, which ultimately cost him his life.
